If a dealership is not effectively utilizing social media to promote their business, reach potential customers and increase sales, they will continue to lag behind more progressive dealerships and businesses that are reaping the benefits of this free form of advertising!

A recent article on the benefits of social media on RelevateAuto.com explains, “With the advancement of faster and better technologies, new ways to mine for social purchase intent, and more options for personalization that can lead to conversion, now is the time for dealerships to build a strong competency in social media marketing.”

In fact, a recent study revealed some interesting automotive social media trends including:

  • Car buyers rank social networks as more important than dealership websites in their dealership selection process
  • 75% of car buyers and 68% of service customers say internet research, including social media and review sites, is the most helpful source of information when selecting a car dealership
  • Only 16% of car buyers say they solely use dealership websites for research when looking for a new vehicle
  • Social media incentives and coupons are especially effective, with 45% of car buyers and 30% of service customers stating that they would “check-in” at a car dealership on Facebook to take advantage of various promotions
  • 66% of car shoppers have admitted to clicking on a dealership’s Facebook ad
  • 84% of all consumers are on Facebook

When it comes to car shopping – social media sites are clearly a major influence in a buyer’s decision making process. As a dealership you should be harnessing the marketing power of social media. Following are some effective social media strategies for automobile dealerships.

Target Potential Customers on Facebook

With over 80% of consumers using this social media platform, you have a huge audience here. Place ads to reach people who have indicated they are in the market for a car. According to V12DATA, “You can narrow down these selects to geographic areas near your dealership, by vehicle type, gender, consumer interests, and more.”

Market to Millennials through Instagram

Most millennials have left Facebook behind and use Instagram as their main social media platform. Instagram is most often used on mobile devices and is all about taking, sharing, and uploading pictures and videos. Instagram can offer a creative platform to share your brand and your dealership’s story.

Use Twitter to Promote Sales

Twitter continues to be a popular choice among auto consumers. “With over 65,000 daily tweets about purchasing or researching a new car, Twitter gives auto brands the unique opportunity to connect with an audience of in-market shoppers who have expressed intent to buy a car,” said Rob Pietsch, head of Twitter’s Auto Vertical. Dealerships can use Twitter to build brand awareness and affinity with interested consumers.

Utilize Video Marketing on YouTube

Many consumers turn to YouTube to watch videos to get information about different vehicles. You should have promotional and informational videos embedded into your website but they should also be hosted on a channel such as YouTube for more organic visibility.

Maintaining a strong social media presence can generate consumer interest, increase traffic to your website (and your dealership) and increase sales.
